Job Title: Information Architect/Data Architect

Location: Birmingham (West Midlands)

Duration: 6 months contract plus possible extension

Day Rate: Competitive (depending on experience)


The Information Architect is responsible for development of an overarching information and data architecture for the company, including structures, standards, policies, governance and models, to ensure we understand our information and can manage it effectively through the life of the programme. Provides guidance and strategic advice to IT delivery projects on the correct way to structure and manage information throughout its live-cycle.


The successful Information Architect will sit within the IT Department who is responsible for the overall IT Strategy and the delivery and support of IT solutions across the organisation. This role is part of the Information Management function within IT. Information Management is responsible for the use and governance of information across the company and as part of IT solution design. The Information Management functions covers Information Management Strategy, Data Architecture, BI & Analytics and IT Security Operations.

Day-to-day Responsibilities:

The Information Architect takes responsibility for information and data architecture:

  • Develops organisation's information model and ensures it is aligned with strategy (and other) needs
  • Ensures the information model is integrated with wider business and technology architectures such as the systems landscape and business capability requirements.

The Information Architect has responsibility for aspects of developing and implementing the company information and data strategy:

  • Advises stakeholders on improvements to information management and usage, assists teams to implement these improvement
  • Active part of IT project teams, designing Information Architecture aspects of a project and having responsibility for approving the Information Management products detailed in the IT project life cycle.

Supports the governance and management of information:

  • Active engagement in information governance to review, approve, communicate and ensure adherence to the Information Management Strategy. Participates in the Information Governance Group providing information on IT projects and completing required actions.
  • Works closely with the Information Assurance team to ensure company information is managed safely, securely and legally. Takes responsibility for reporting and escalating issues with information security.
  • Works with the supply chain eg Contractors. Reviews Information Management deliverables they produce to make sure they meet company requirements.

Assures the quality of data:

  • Gate keeper for data standards and practices across multiple projects, facilitate workshops with other architects within the programme.
  • Advises Information Asset Owners on best practise for managing data to ensure quality.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Knowledge of architecture frameworks and processes (eg TOGAF)
  • Knowledge of the process to define requirements for, and deliver, technology and business change.
  • Ability to create both conceptual and logical data models to meet business or IT solution requirements
  • Knowledge of architectural tools such as Sparx EA, Casewise or ERwin
  • Experience and understanding of defining and building information/data models to provide a full understanding of data and expose relevant issues, risks and opportunities
  • Experience or clear understanding of information/Datamodelling in the context of organisational business architecture and IT architecture
  • Experience of working in large, complex organisations with multiple data requirements
  • At least 5 years' experience of information or data architecture or strategy, or similar, in large organisations
